Orang-hutan, the “men of the forest” are highly intelligent great apes that share most of the genes with Homo sapiens, as well as the ability to make and use simple tools. They also tend their offspring for 6 years; the longest timeframe in the animal-kingdom, only surpassed by humans. Habitat loss - due to deforestation for oil palm plantations, has forced the once undivided population to 21 isolated groups scattered on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.
